1x05: The Portait
This episode starts with Neal on the street with Mozzie (finally I corrected it. I apologize for calling him Moss all these episodes). He is holding the bottle Kate left him, and is the topic of discussion. He finds a note from Kate hidden nearby, and I think I agree with her: He should stop looking for her. But no, that keeps him thinking. Peter pays him a visit in his loft, and, as one can figure out...there's a case in which they need his help in. It's about a robbery of a painting in a residence. They almost crash against a taxi, but they keep on talking about this love/hate thing they have...and almost crash again.
The owner of the residence is a young girl, and she tells them what happened at the time of the robbery. Another man is standing by the stairs and goes away fast. He goes to question the uncle as Neal is shown pictures of the painting, and the lady tells her a story. Peter felt awkward for a second there. Credit sequence.
Both are leaving the fancy apartment, and Peter tells him the uncle is a Wall Street broker, but nothing further. For those purposes, Caffrey asks where the bounds are in his consultant job, and has an idea on how to get further intel on the uncle. He waits for him outside his workplace and starts asking questions about Juliana (I believe it's that) and the painting. Gary tries to get Neal off his back and writes him a check. But the check has the name of a bad guy Burke must know from a previous case.
At thed FBI, Jones is showing Peter tapes of the guy whose name was on the check, accompanied by a bodyguard or something. The guys uses suspicious And for these purposes, they have hired a woman whose last name is Van Der Zaant. She set up a meeting for Neal to go as a wealthy client to meet with this guy. And another female that falls for his charm.
Ohlala! Half-nude Neal. He's in his room, trying to figure out if there is a hidden message in the note left by Kate. There is something about Friday. Next up, both buddies are in the gallery, setting up the meeting. As both are being wired, Van Der Zaant REALLY seems turned on by him. She asks him about his prison stint, and whether he escaped from there because of a girl. Neal is George Devore, and he has just met the people who have the money as, of course, Burke & Co. are hearing it all. But it all wents down the drain when he sees people signalling themselves outside. As the painting is being analysed, they run off with the money and the painting. As part of the cover, both are arrested and I believe Burke really enjoyed shoving Neal into the car. But the other two are on the loose again.
Peter is with his wife, walking together. He has lost 100.000, but that at least Neal didn't take them and run. He feels there is something about Neal that seems contradictive. But they split outside his work. The hat is back!! :D. Happy moi. The gallery curator is there, and they are questioning him. Caffrey brags about his knowledge of art, since as a felon he knows a lot about those. The painting was apparently stolen in 1967. They also interrogate Juliana about the painting her grandmother brought from Hungary...that she stole. She shows Neal the locket that's exactly like the one in the painting. And the next thing we know they're looking for a Brigitte.
It's cool when they are in the car and Neal is disgusted by the sandwich Peter eats, and he asks him to switch the radio. Afterwards, Neal is at a fancy restaurant, and he approaches a table where there's two women. He speaks French! Sexy!!. The fact that he is handsome does help a lot, because this Brigitte invited both to their suite. Golden chance to find the painting?
Poor Burke is being dragged as the other enjoys Neal's company. He prepares a couple of drinks and notice the door being locked as they flirt with them. As Neal and one of the girls slow dance, he steals the key and gets in and, as Caffrey gets in...the girls have fun with Peter. He must feel like crap since he is married. They take his phone away. It was the wife!! Haha! How is he gonna get away from this? Poor Elizabeth, she thinks he's in a club! All he wants is to run as the 'consultant' finds the painting hidden. And it IS the real deal.
The guy with whom Neal and Van Der Zaant had met arrived at the room of the ladies to take the painting as the buddies are talking about how he explained to Elizabeth the situation of the previous night. They have dinner together, and he tells her the truth. I didn't know they have been married for 10 years. Neal gets a call from the guy, saying he had bought a drink for his girlfriend with his credit card, and that if he doesn't return the painting, his thug will tear the gallery apart.
Now Neal is with Mozzie, taking a look at the painting. And he is scolding Caffrey about stealing it. He can't even explain it to Burke as Elizabeth is looking from behind. Caffrey leaves and he looks at the file, where there's a post-it butterfly clipped to it. Caffrey is...painting a forgery of the painting? Mozzie sometimes can be the voice of reason for him, but it looks as good as the real deal.
The day after, they meet at a car storage or something that looks like it. Neal is on his own, and he simply walks as if nothing had happened as the FBI closes in the other guy. The curator is happy and Neal is at Juliana's, she is showing him the locket and the story behind it. Peter knows what the hell Caffrey did. But the forgery's so good that they keep it, and Juliana is left with the original where it was hanging.
Mozzie meets in the middle of the streets of New York City, always eating. It's Friday at noon, and a payphone rings. It's Kate. And he spots her in a building. The man with the ring is close, so Neal can't approach her. She wants to know where he hid everything, because he wants it all, and that way he would let her go back home. But as crazy as he is, he runs after her and when Mozzie takes the call, Kate tells him to tell Neal she loves him and the call dies. The episode ends with Neal running and shouting her name.
Great episode, bring on more! :)
