I have reporting this week, so I'll start leaving the recaps in advance. And because afterwards I won't have time for anything :)
1x04: Flip of the Coin
This episode starts with Peter and Neal in his office, the agent asking the con questions. Seems he wants him to check some records of a dealer, so he sends them to a room full of filed archives. Neal seems cool...until Cruz walks in. Caffrey was part of Lauren's thesis, and they have a chat about a rumor that involves him. And she pretty much plays with him! Jones walks into Peter's office, and they sight a visitor: Elizabeth, alongside a friend. They talk about an arrest warrant issued against Dana (the friend's) husband. Neal should learn timing and not interrupt couples talking. But Elizabeth brings him in as well. Poor thing, he's been used back and forth.
This Mitchell (last name) guy will turn himself in, and says he was being set up and explains that a guy whose last name is Ames asked him to transport stuff back to the US while he was overseas (he's military) before being taken in while Neal, Peter, Elizabeth and the wife watch. Credit sequence.
As always, Neal jumps into conclussions he shares with Burke just by observing. And as usual, he discredits them and goes to find Ames. Nothing is brought out from this, and Peter notices one of the guards has blisters in his arm.
At the FBI, Jones and Lauren are assembled to investigate evidence, and Neal gets in the middle. I just LOVE when Burke gets on Caffrey's side and starts believing in is his crazy ideas, since there were prints in the goods to then jump to the buddies drinking beer and mixing personal and professional talk. I have to say this in every episode, but Matt Bomer looks great.
Peter gets home where Dana and his wife are there (and the cute dog too). He informs Dana of the progress made in the investigation and tries his best to ask her questions about her husband. But Elizabeth is upset and they go away to talk. Poor Dana, she's a wreck. But again, any woman would be in that situation. After she's back, Dana confesses something about a woman that took him out for a drink, and she starts having second thoughts on the man she married. This woman was a journalist following up on a story on the unit he was at.
Back at the FBI, they talk about this reporter named Alicia and start reconstructing her involvement and that night she spent with John, and where Ames fits in this. So they go talk to her. As Peter checks in, Neal sits down next to a woman. They love him! Burke goes upstairs to wait and Caffrey flirts.
Poor Neal, he was left in the lobby and Burke leaves him to check her reactions. Oh, wow...Another '24' alumni: Kate Warner! (Sarah Wynter) If that is the case, I should refer to her as her character in another show. Makes things easier for me. Neal tries to pass smoothly as coffee boy, and it works! Adorable. Peter sees Kate/Alicia enter her office and scolds Neal.
She arrives at the TV set as coffee-kid Caffrey watches, pretending to be a sportsanchor named Gary. Oh, Burke is gonna be super pissed if he finds out! He still watches her as she opens a locked drawer and meets with Peter. Neal grabs a rose and rushes to her office to work the con magic. He finds a paper and copies it. Kate/Alicia seems uncomfortable, and my guess is that she is hurried to get out of there. My guess is that she is hiding something.
See? I told you Peter would be mad at Neal for the little trick he pulled. After he leaves, Neal calls Moss and asks for a favor. I DO have a doubt: If Neal has the tracker, how can he move so freely whenever he's with Peter?Anyways, the FBI agent gets home to the wife as Caffrey us in his room, observing the infamous bottle alongside a map of NYC. He calls Moss again, thinking he's figured out the map in the bottle.
The door knocks, and it's Peter with some beer instead of Moss. I like Caffrey's pad, by the way. Then Moss arrives and Peter catches up to something, and before Neal can kick Moss out by letting him know it's the wrong place, Peter talks to him. Neal is pissed.
Neal is being ignored, and Peter looks like he's had one too many beers. Moss hands him a coin that looks old, but that it's part that says Kate/Alicia is guilty. The day after, she is informed on a story exclusive for her, and that someone wants to see her: Neal! So she sits him down for an interview and between the lines, he grills her, and most importantly, brought the coin with him. He flips it and she asks to turn cameras off.
Next thing we know, Peter is interrogating her at the FBI. She says she needed the money, and that's why she accepted to transport something back to the US, and hence framed Mitchell. And she'll have to win Aimes to try making a deal for herself.
Next, Neal is with Jones and Lauren, setting the whole thing up, and Neal has the photo of a Mercedes seized as evidence in his hand. Upon arrival home, he wakes up Moss (who looks like he has a hangover) and tells him Aimes is meeting with him today, and that he needs a car to match the part of a high-roller. So, for that matter, Neal uses his FBI skills to get a limo, with Moss as aide. It works: Neal has a limousine for the meeting. Of course, Jones, Burke and others watch as Kate, Neal and an undercover Lauren arrive to the meeting. So far, so good...Caffrey should stop bragging, and things are starting to complicate. Lauren breaks the silence and shows money. But he's not stupid: He knows he's being fooled by the FBI and runs off. Lauren's one tough gal, by the way. And Moss simply enjoys the good life while listening opera...and...he runs over Aimes. LOL!
Eventually, the pieces are recovered and Kate/Alicia is taken back to the FBI. Peter arrives home with Mitchell, who has been released and reunited with Dana as Peter and Elizabeth watch this lovely encounter.
