[Recaps] White Collar Season 1 / Episode 3 - Book of Hours

1x03: Book of Hours

This episode starts with Jones bringing Cruz and another agent coffee. Seems like they are in a van, watching a couple of men 'bitching about a bible'. They spot a man whose last name is Barelli, and another headed to their van. As if it were nothing, he knocks on the door and asks if they're FBI...because he needs their help.

At the FBI, Peter is interrogating this Barelli guy (that has Mafia bonds) about what is so special about this bible someone stole from his church. Turns out this is a very old book in which Saints prayed on, and it's miraculous brought from Naples (Italy). Burke's superior wants him to get on it to avoid a bigger mess, and he wants him to stop illegal betting at Mosso's in exchange for finding this Bible.

Neal is with his associate in a table. He can't stop looking at the bottle, and still figuring out what hides there. Oh, this man must really be in love! The guy (Moss, I think) will take the bottle for analysis as Neal is called by Peter. Credit sequence.

Now they are in a church to investigate the 'smash n' dash' with the bible. There's Lauren, Jones and Barelli too. Caffrey looks great on an all-black suit. Next, Moss is asking Neal in his pad why this bible is special. Turns out they know it makes miracles. Neal proposes to Peter that it could be stolen by a true believer, just not for the money.

Back at the church, the buddies talk about the church and bible, and religious beliefs. The Father meets with them, and they ask him about the healing powers it had, and who could be crazy enough to believe in it. He tells them that the night of the theft, a homeless man named Steve slept in the sanctuary, and that someone in his family was sick.

They find this Steve man in a park to ask him questions, and he tells them he took it. And that he did that for somebody else in order that he told Steve how to cure for his dog, Lucy (Matt looks cute petting it). They take him to the FBI so that Lauren shows him pictures to ID the guy who asked him to steal it. Burke's superior interrupts them to inform that Paul Ignazio (Barelli's number 2, and the guy with who he was discussing at the begining) was shot. Steve says that's his guy.

Peter and his superior head to the crime scene where Ignazio was shot, and they find a bullet. There's another agent that seems that holds a grudge against Peter, based on how pissed Burke is. While looking at the sea, Neal is told that they're out of the case. They are back to square one...unless Neal has one of his bright ideas and asks Peter for his jacket.

Moss doubles at a FBI agent to enter Ignazio's apartment, but the cop puts him problems to enter...until he restorts to the phone and enters. Caffrey is looking for evidence regarding the bible theft. Seems Ignazio was researching something...and the lead is on a book and meeting. So with that, Neal calls Peter to tell him about the research and the name Maria Fiametta.

They go to question Maria about this research, and instead she seems more interested in Neal (again, who wouldn't'?). She tells them that is not a bible. She has no idea about any of that, again she seems more interested in asking Caffrey out :). Peter gives her his card in case she hears anything.

Next, Moss and Neal are talking about findings when Peter calls him. Are they eating chinese or anything? Anyways, Elizabeth arrives as they are discussing the bible case. She wants to know what's up. Neal is so creative he illustrates it with plastic cups. And they have a lead on that Maria is the one that killed Ignazio, and that she has the bible in her power. Peter points out she knew who Neal was, and that it could work if he shows interest in it. But Elizabeth has a more effective idea: ask her out! Womew always think it better.

So he takes her out for dinner at a fancy restaurant, and they talk about anything, bible included. Neal has to keep her away from home for at least an hour. Maria asks him to order for her while she is up to something :)

Lauren is recovering evidence with Jones when he gets a message that their suspect is coming home. Later, Maria and Neal are in her apartment to have a drink. "Honesty is a challenging game" Caffrey says as she leaves....to keep him under tabs! That way, she finds out the FBI was there before. She is trying to seduce him, but really tells him she doesn't trust him. He has to answer one question truthfully, so he drops the tracker in his wine as proof. So she has the bible, and Neal offers her a deal to avoid something worse:250.000

Again, that hat is going to KILL me!! Neal will go ahead as Peter is at home, and his wife points out he is wearing a lucky tie. Burke is worried that Caffrey will bail because he would have to cut the ankle tracker and could run with the money of book. Elizabeth tells him that sometimes, he has to take a leap of faith.

Peter, Cruz and this other agent that is enemy of Burke are watching Neal meeting with Maria. I wanna be her, just to...get frisked. She is clean, and proceeds to do the same. She asks for the money, he for the book. Neal cuts the tracker and asks her to drive. Everyone knows about it, except this other guy.

Maria drives them to an abandoned place next to the river where she shows him the bible. He is analysising it, and when satisfied, he wires the money...and she points a gun at him, demanding the bible! She killed Ignazio, and the FBI arrives to capture her. Aww, we all thought Neal had been shot, but the bullet hit the bible. Barelli's at the scene too, and is happy to get it back. Neal gave it to Moss? Huh? This makes Barelli mad, and Peter knows exactly where it is: At the church, where Steve has him, and Lucy starts licking Barelli's hand. Steve tells him about her, and Barelli offers to take him somewhere they can help the dog. The two buddies are talking about everything that happened, and Neal is put another tracker in his ankle. Peter finds his jacket in a bench, and they walk out of the church.

And finally, Neal poured a little of the bottle in a glass, and sees something reflected in the label by the fire: A map of the NYC subway, and he tells Moss about what could it mean...

Great episode, bring on more! :)
