1x08: Hard Sell
This episode starts with Neal and Mozzie playing chess and talking about the Peter theory and the famous ring that is on the Kate picture. Suppose is that, if he finds the ring, he will find the king (refering to chess, and that Caffrey feels like a pawn)
Next up, he's at the FBI in one of those sharp suits I love so much as Burke is with a guy that shoves Neal the cover featuring his mugshot in his face. This guy has come from the Dallas office investigating a case, in which they will need Neal's services. This guy is questioning whether Caffrey is the right man for this boiler room case, and Peter explains why he escaped (Kate is no longer an issue, suspicious?) and that the tracker keeps him restricted. Jump into the conference room, explaining what the case was all about and who are the victims of the scam. One of the points mentioned is that they have a female informant on the inside, hence Caffrey will be sent in.
He will meet with a man named Brad and Burke shows him the picture of the girl inside and explains him what they're up to and what he has to do to figure out who's behind this. He gives him a pen that doubles as a tracker and Peter informs that they'll cut the tracker, but if he tries any escape again, he's back to jail.
Next scene, we are at a large space with this chick, Madison, handing a guy (Brad) some papers. Neal comes in and starts working his magic to get inside the business as the FBI is watching. Brad tells him to deal with the girls and gets him to work. The number is Burke, lol! I really wanna see how he sells the broker speech to him. So far, he's doing a great job in doing it. This Brad kid seems pleased with the job, and I have the feeling 'Mr. Merriweather' bought it! His interview went great, he's in :) Nick/Neal is quickly becoming a rising star in the business as the day comes to an end. Brad tells him the 'man behind the curtain' wants to meet him. Peter & Co. catch this info, and Jones points out that they'll lose the audio. Chosen location? Somewhere that looks like a library. The guy comes up to him and offers Neal a drink. His name is Avery Phiillips, and that information is transmitted to Peter at home.
Jones is offered coffee by Elizabeth as they check the audio recorded by Neal using that pen. Neal excuses himself to go to the bathroom and looks at pictures on his way up. HE HAS FOUND THE RING!! Elizabeth comes up and asks what's wrong before letting him go to the toilet.
The next morning they're on briefing. Avery had a legit business with a guy named Reed, and Neal has no brighter idea than to lightly confront Peter by a roleplay. He is pissed, and that can be seen when he throws away the chess set. Neal needs cash that he asks Mozzie for. He can't believe the ring discovery, and Mozzie suggests that he could run since he has no tracker.
At the FBI, Peter is briefing his team about what to do, when Lauren comes up with an idea: That the alleged CEO of this pharmaceutical company offers Reed a deal of profitable earnings. Caffrey proposes Peter, because people 'trusts him'. He looks suspicious and pulls Neal aside to ask what's wrong.
Neal is back undercover and Brad asks him not to transfer the call to Madison, and tells him there's a party on saturday. Avery receives the CEO (Peter) in his office, and he follows the plan. He wants in, because his company owes him. Bribing always work, because he gives Avery until monday before he talks to the feds.
This little 'get-together' consisted on shooting by a bay house as Peter comes inside the place to make business. He leads Burke to a safe or something...full of comics! Huh? Oh , crap. This guy is up to something really bad. Next, they're led outside and Neal is still refusing to take a shot. Really tense moments between our buddies, as Caffrey unleashes his frustrations shooting. He sees Madison being led inside the house and Avery excuses himself because he has 'some business to take care of'. Neal tells Peter that Madison is the mole, and has no brighter idea than to sell him out after he confronts him about the ring and that he has Kate. Oh, no!!
Peter continues to sell him out in front of everyone as a corporate spy for Reed. Avery changes of plans because feels fooled. He instructs that Madison is taken out of the car and Neal demands 5% of the profits. Seems the deal convinced them, and they leave him in peace.
Back in NYC, Caffrey shares his suspicions with Elizabeth, who (of course) defends her husband. Burke explains that the ring is something FBi agents get after 10 years. When Neal leaves, Elizabeth asks whether he'll tell Neal about that meeting with Kate. When the case is over, Peter will think about it.
I need to make a statement: Matt Bomer can totally pull off that pink shirt. He enters Reed's office to meet with him, and that way, play him against Avery. Neal has him hear a recording that confirms what he just said. He demands Reed some records in exchange for help. That information is transmitted to Jones and Lauren, who tells the rest the paper trail is at the vault with the comics. After a brief explanation on how it works, they hand him a breather disguised as a cigar. Wow, the FBi doesn't have these cool gadgets in real life.
Both Burke and Caffrey are invited to that party of fancy-nerdy people. Drinking champagne, he excuses himself to 'smoke the cigar' when actually he heads into the vault. I smell trouble here. judging by Jones' reaction. He tells Peter Reed has walked into the party and the purpose has been achieved: putting one against the other. This gives Burke a chance to get away, and they grab shotguns to go for him. Peter warns Neal about the shot and they're locked inside the vault. Air is being sucked in. Peter has the breather as Neal tries to find the kill switch, but he faints. Burke has to decide: the switch or Neal. So he drops it and the team bursts in.
Caffrey is brought back and both are outside the house. Time to confess the Kate thing: What this guy wants is...It doesn't tell, it shows an extended version of last episode's ending. Kate has a gun, and Peter shows the ring. He asks to leave him alone and let him go for the damage it's doing to Caffrey. Wow, looks like Burke stood out for him....until Kate says he stole a music box. Fowler IS indeed, involved as well. The facts that he has the ring, and other things Peter points out make me not think of him as the traitor. Peter tells him that she might be against him, but poor Neal is so in love he doesn't believe it.
And last, but not least...he shows up at Mozzie's to show him the tracker. Contrary to what he told Peter, he has no clue of where that music box is at...but the one thing he's sure of is that he has to find it, and steal it first. As Mozzie said, 'Welcome back'.
Great episode, bring on more! :)
