2x04: By the Book
We kick things off with Neal and Mozzie on the streets of NYC. Quite surprising to see Moz out on the field, telling Neal he can go anywhere he wants, not trapped by an ankle tracker. Anyways, he heads to a cafe, sets things up at the table (a book included) when a waitress named Gina comes to him. Seems they know each other from quite a while, judging by their chat and knowing what he orders. But everything changes when she asks Mozzie if he really has friends at the FBI because two men have come looking for her. She says she's taking her break earlier and leaves a paper inside his book.
At the FBI, Peter is with a team (of course, Neal, Jones and Diana) seeing a case about an identity theft gang (or better said, a competition to see who gets Peter's special pen). He says that will be seen when he gets back from lunch with Elizabeth (oh, Neal wants it too!). Anyways, when Caffrey gets to the elevator, he gets a message from someone to meet him on the 20th floor. It's an undercover Mozzie, who has come to his friend for the first time because Gina is in trouble, and the title of the book she gave him is a clue, because its plot is about a girl who got in too deep trouble. He even is prepared, with a file to Neal to look at. But what I loved even more was that Moz made an excuse to people who wanted to take the elevator on every floor. Anyways, Mozzie runs off and Neal sends back the elevator to the 21st floor, under the incredulous look of Burke & Co. Credit sequence.
Neal goes to a young FBI agent, asking him to run Gina's name with the promise that he will be the one that gets the desired Quantico pen. He does and everything seems quiet on her records. Mozzie is certain that Gina is in trouble, and him and Neal get to her apartment. Using his unconventional methods, he sees that the place is upside down. I think Moz should ask her out one of these days. They go in, looking for something. Poor Mozzie has Neal look for prints (and is always ready, which is surprising), and they find a message on the table. Since Neal's pal knows a lot about mystery novels, he knows that it means something really bad is up.
Peter, in the meantime, is enjoying a nice, outdoors lunch with Elizabeth when he gets a call from the agent Neal had make him run Gina's name. But what really catches my attention is that Elizabeth DID mention that she heard Mozzie say it once. But sooner rather than later, he has to go back to the office, where Diana shows him the tapes of the elevator surveillance. Burke is surprised to see Moz got so close to the office. Suddenly, the name of Christopher Navarro pops up...I think from Gina's phone records. But Burke gets that, he shouts that he wants to know where Neal and Mozzie are at.
Speaking of those two, Caffrey breaks in to a place where Navarro is making business as Diana and Peter are praying that the conman isn't stuck in the middle. But the sound of the texts give him away. I said texts because the FBI isn't the only one. Mozzie is watching men with guns arrive too. Uh-oh...Is everybody in distress here? For a second, he thinks so, then no, then again when the FBI gets there to collect Neal.
The first thing he wants to know is where Mozzie is at. Poor Moz, being at the FBI scares the crap out of him. But anyways, both come in for questioning with Peter about Navarro and Gina. The guy in the pictures they saw at her place was her boyfriend, but Neal overheard this guy stole money from Navarro. And that's not all. Diana just spotted a credit card movement from a park...a nuts purchase. Mozzie finds it suspicious, because he knows Gina is allergic to it. I'll have to agree with them...Mozzie is on the limit of stalking.
They get to the park and find nothing, because it was a couple of hours ago. So Peter calls Jones to look for the credit card purchase records. What catches their attention is the big number of tourists with videocameras. That is used at the FBI to see if in any of the tapes they spot Gina. We find out Mozzie can't eat dairy when he complains there's provolone in his ciabatta. But that is soon forgotten when Gina is spotted in one of the tapes. So they will use all of those to create panoramic view of that area of the park. Not only they spot Gina, but the boyfriend and one of the guys that was at the diner that Moz spotted. They find Gina's phone with a voice message directed at Tommy (the boyfriend) from Navarro. If he doesn't bring in the money, Gina dies. That seems to affect Mozzie deeply.
At the FBI, they are at a late-night meeting judging what Tommy is doing, and why Navarro is bothering so much with $100.000. For now, they will keep an eye on state lines and any other way he could be fleeing. Jones will also be in charge of keeping an eye on Neal and Moz.Speaking of those two, they are talking about the similarities this Gina thing could have with Kate's story. Also that the easiest way to disappear is by getting a new identity with all that money. And to top it off, they see a van through the window, knowing that they are under surveillance.
The next day, Neal calls Jones to cash in a favor. That favor involves an old source of him and Mozzie's (Devlin) outside a waffles cart. Neal says they need his help, and points out to Jones (who changed his suit) saying someone stole money from Navarro (Note: Loving Devlin's shirt. Gives away his business smoothly). Devlin breaks down in front of Jones about what they need to know before he takes them away.
Peter is running the operative when Diana comes in with information that Tommy was going to pay $5000 to a taxi driver to get him to Chicago. But the guy spoke when he didn't get the full payment. Also, it is then when Jones calls in, saying that he's got the name of the new ID. Now we are with this Tommy person, busted on the street by Burke and Diana and taken away for questioning. It is then when Peter tells him that Navarro has Gina.
Following that, Peter has taken command on this operation, and since Mozzie is snooping Diana wiring Tommy, Neal has to get him in Peter's view. Navarro and a couple of guards arrive, so it's time to make the money drop. Tommy tries to run, knowing that Navarro will most likely kill him...but it isn't him that decides to go on the field for the love of Gina. It was Mozzie, and all it took was Jones to say there was a problem. He is threatened with a gun as he quotes the book Gina told him about. They move in, and Navarro takes Mozzie away. What he said came from the book.
Mozzie is taken to a wide, empty spot where Navarro is at. He is asked where the money is at, but demands to see Gina first. She is surprised to see Moz instead of Tommy, and the conversation gets back to the money. Mozzie asks for a coffee with no cream or milk first. He does the exact same thing he did at Peter's office: Sweep cups. They decide an hour and a place to make the money exchange with Tommy. During business hours, unarmed, on a rooftop. Peter decides to pay Neal a visit, book in hand and asking what 'perfect exchange' means. This is mixed with what I explained with Mozzie earlier, up to where Navarro accepts the terms.
It's a rainy day in New York, and Peter and Neal are in a car, waiting for the magic to happen. The first thing is that Navarro's guy arrives outside a library. Neal realizes something's wrong and wants to get out of the car, but Burke stops him. As the guy is entering, Peter demands that he takes them to the vault at gunpoint.
Gina asks Mozzie how on earth he got involved in all this mess and whether Tommy will come for her. As they are talking, Navarro is getting ready to head to the meeting point. He decides he doesn't need Mozzie anymore and points a gun at him with the clear intention to kill him in front of Gina's eyes. But Peter gets there in time with a team. Oh, my god! It's a stand-off...where even Mozzie holds a gun. Eventually, the FBI outnumbers them and Mozzie gets a kiss from Gina.
After all this mess, Gina and Mozzie are talking about her break-up with Tommy and that is her last day at the diner. She will be heading for a California adventure. As a farewell gift, she gives him a napkin with a code that says 'You are cute too'. Peter and Neal wait for him outside and the three of them walk off. Oh, and if you wonder, I think Caffrey won the damned pen.
