2x06: In the Red
This episode begins with Neal standing outside a building and acting as an undercover asset for the FBI. A SUV arrives on the spot, and a woman is inside to make a trade. Jones, Peter and Diana are watching this unfold, and they even take the time to bet. They question why Caffrey is talking her out of it, but she hands him some jewels as he hands a briefcase. Using the codeword, the feds move in to arrest her and, when Peter opens the back door, he finds the woman's son sleeping. She pleads that they don't give him away. Credit sequence.
Neal arrives to his pad, and as always, Mozzie is there. He wants to thank him for all he's done. But that's not all. About the cockpit recorder, he headed to Sara's apartment and managed to beat the state of the art technology that she installed. So Moz hands him the envelope that stays hidden.
The two buddies talk about the kid being handed to Child Services as his mother claims she's not a jewel thief. Jones calls Burke to say Catherine McMillian (the woman) wants to talk to him. So they get on the subway, and next thing we know is that she's talking about the adoption of this child, through a lawyer called Luke Donovan and that he's pressing for money, and that the adoption might be not so clean because the birth mother has come back. It may be an extortion, but I ain't so sure.
Peter goes to talk to Donovan as to why he's asking for US$100.000 regarding this adoption. He says he hasn't done anything wrong, and, as Peter walks out he crosses a man that has ties to the mob, just as he told Neal. Jones is in charge to see where he is when Sara arrives to the office, much to the surprise of both. She says that he broke in, and wants to submit Neal to a polygraph. Excuse me, but who on earth has one? Anyways, he says he didn't do it...and has a trick under his sleeve to prove that. Afterwards, Burke has some fun scolding him before Jones reports with updates. But the conversation about Sara isn't over.
They head to the field and see a woman in a purple dress, so, using his smooth skills, introduces his phone into the man's pocket. That way they hear the password to get in the place, which looks like a place to play and gamble. Never losing his sight off the man, he lights a cigar, and using his skills as Nick Holden, says he wants in the game. For now, it will cost him $100.000 off an acount. And, since who takes the order is a girl, he manages to buy himself time. And Peter's WTF face is priceless!
Jones and Diana managed to have access to Donovan's files. So far, it all looks legit. And to top it off, he HAS to win a poker game friday night. Both will pose as a couple that is looking to adopt. Meanwhile, Caffrey tells Mozzie about the break-in and Donovan's case that uses these adoptions as leverage. The way to bring him down is through a poker game as Moz says he's been foster cared, not adopted.
Inside our handy FBI undercover van, Jones and Diana are ready to go undercover, pretending to be a very credible married couple, going to meet Donovan to request his help for international adoption. But the guy isn't an idiot. He asks for $50.000, and that means he bit the bait. Neal, on his side, wants to take no risks in this operation. But his luck is about to run out when Sara arrives with two detectives to perform a search warrant in his house, eventually finding the FAA package.
Donovan is, once again, talking to Peter. But this time in his offices at the FBI about these extorsion claims. Burke is confident he's bluffing, but Diana says he's in trouble because he's been arrested. Sara says he stole the package before being taken away. Peter talks to Sara about the envelope's content and its relation to Kate. But for now, he has to be released to bring Donovan down.
At night, Peter gives him a briefcase with the money, and as he takes off the tracker, says that he'll have to beat the lawyer the old-fashioned way. The game is on until only one player is standing, and around the table there's a bunch of people with expectations. It doesn't take much for the first to withdraw. Little by little the stakes are higher, and less players on the table, until Donovan and Holden (Neal) are the two left. Donovan decides to go all in, and I have a bad feeling the second Neal does the same. Nick just beat him at his own game!!
Of course, Peter has to question the methods he used to win, but at least the purpose worked because the lawyer is desperate after losing it. A while later, Burke is talking to his wife about both her plans and Neal's current situation. He has to hold it off because Donovan wants to talk to Jones and Diana. So they hear it from the conference room, but there is something we had no idea about: Donovan asks for $200.000...as two men are on his side, one of them aiming a gun at him.
The next day, Diana says he changed the hour and that he's either spooked or up to something. But, according to Neal's data, the guy booked a flight to Buenos Aires, with the purpose of taking the money and run. As Diana is undercover, she notices two black cars pulling up outside the office and suspects something is up. It's the mob that tells her to hand over the money to them. Peter informs that she has to make a stall as the FBI breaks in. They are willing to make a deal with them if they help to bring down the adoption fraud.
NIcholas/Neal and Donovan are face to face, and the lawyer says he hasn't done anything wrong as he hears noises that could signal torture...wait, commanded by Peter? Is he doing this for the fun of it? But anyways, it manages to put Donovan in alert and say he can get money from his clients for the poker game. When he sees Neal is part of the FBI, he realizes everybody is part of this set up. Anyways, the attorney is arrested and taken away.
Neal is making coffee when he sees Catherine (the woman from the begining) with her son. She has come to thank them, and when the kid waved at them was so cute. She got away easy. Another case solved, and another cup of bad coffee.
OMG! Did the temperature just rose here by seeing Neal half nude? Anyways, Sara comes in to give him the envelope back, saying she heard it and wants in, and that he talks to her about Kate. So him and Mozzie play it, Caffrey really affected. But at least, with that, they can figure out who Moreau was talking to.
Great episode, bring on more!! ASAP.
