1x03 - South Bound Suarez
Here we start at Georgetown University, with Annie playing soccer and a flashback to Caracas, Venezuela. Children play soccer there too, and a guy (Lopez) is walking up to a balcony after watching them and his surroundings...where he is the victim of an attempt by other two. Too bad he got in the car and got strangled when he was trying to run. Note aside, I can't help but laugh how they portrait latins. The neighborhoood is poor, the actions are cliché and please don't get me started on the looks and dialogues...before we get into a long debate on that. Anyways, the guy who killed the bald dude found nothing brighter than to take the medal as trophy and give it to his lover as a present.
Back with Annie (considering that both scenes intertwined), the player that scored the goal against her (Diego) tries to make a move on her after the match (and kicking her ass in soccer) as they both regain energies. He says he will do anything for her as the reason she puts to stay, and she asks him a favor...work-related (of course, she doesn't say she's CIA and all...but I didn't understand either). Credit sequence.
It has to do with Diego's sister, Julia. Annie seems to know a lot because she 'has friends in Caracas'...and that because she's the mistress of a shady guy (that we already saw). Diego, of course, is shocked with all this because his sister raised him when they lived in a favela. It has to do with some money transfering to off-shore accounts that could be financing illegal groups. With all this, I think he figured out who she is on his own, but Annie still thinks that he should trust her, and that through him, they should get to Julia. He seems really reluctant to help out, even though Annie offers protection and a new life if they cooperate (because his other choice is getting deported). Annie hands him a card and says she'll need his answer by tonight. If he accepts, she'll buy the beers. And then she leaves...as Auggie sits down next to Diego.
At the Agency, Auggie and Annie explain to Joan what happened, but she seems more concerned with our blind crush being out in the field. He stays behind kinda sad as Annie tells her boss that she got her Smithsonian IDs and, in turn, Joan says that she's being sent out to Caracas on a mission, certain that Diego will come around to help them out. After Annie leaves, Joan sees Jai outside her office with information about the station agent they have in that city (that they haven't had info on him for a couple of days) to then head to Annie's station. She wants to know why everyone thinks Diego's got a crush on her, and Jai explains that she was being watched by others the day of the match. And yes, Joan's prediction turned out to be correct. He called to her 'cover job'.
Annie's sister and family are sharing a breakfast as Annie watches, then gets something to eat before packing her bags, but decides to leave Ben's bracelet. Her sister says it's time that she should let go, and following that advice, she leaves the bracelet on a box as Annie explains she'll be away in museum duties.
Welcome to Caracas, Venezuela. Annie and Diego (who is posing as her boyfriend) have arrived and are looking for Lopez at the terminal. They bump into a woman named Maria that hands Annie a phone. On the other line there's Auggie and Joan, who tell her that Lopez is a no-show, and that it could mean a lot of things, among those the fact that she may have to do this mission on her own. And of course, this makes her nervous.
On a meeting, Jai, Auggie and Joan are at a meeting with other people to see what to do about Annie because she's still too inexperienced to be on the field by herself. Back to Caracas, Diego is certain that he's put himself in something much bigger than what he imagines because it looks like they're being followed. But anyway, they get to the offices of Banco Nacional to see Julia.
She is surprised to see her little brother, and Diego enjoys the chance to introduce Annie as 'the football player' and 'Smithsonian girl'. Annie says she's in business about a letter written to Simon Bolivar, and that she used her mileage to bring him along. Julia takes Annie to 'freshen up', but she doesn't seem to like her because her brother is young and needs to focus on his education back in America. It is then that Annie says her real business involves Julia.
Next thing we know is that she and Diego are following her car into the favela where both grew up. A bunch of kids are surrounding the vehicle because everyone wants to be with her. Forgot to mention that Annie has spoken to her people as well, because they still know nothing about Lopez. Diego has a chance to remember his childhood during the trip.
Julia has brought them to her house, and she is standing by her man no matter what Annie says about her lover being a criminal or that he has many mistresses. What they need her to do is put an electronic tracker to see where the money is going to, but she says it won't take long for that to be discovered. Annie has brought an American passport as part of her offering if she cooperates, but Julia says it's not easy because the kids need her, and that it's not easy to leave everything behind. Annie tries to reason with her using her own experiences, but Julia seems to have read our favorite CIA apprentice.
Back at Langley, Auggie has been waiting for three hours for something to happen as Joan goes to check. But that is short, because we're back to Caracas. Annie is still convincing Julia to go ahead using Diego's dreams as a motivation. But the only way she'll be in is to prove her man's innocence. With that information, Annie calls Joan and Auggie to let them know. But there's the catch that the password for the account is constantly changing for security reasons, and has a special thing they have to get their hands into (all this added with a few jokes about her and Diego).
So for now they'll meet them at lunch the next day at a beach club, the same operatives that were at the airport watching from other tables. Victor is happy to see Diego so grown and is pleased to meet Annie, even offering to accompany her into her Smithsonian activities. As all of them are talking, she pays attention to the medal around Julia's neck, and so do the operatives. This operation is immediately transmitted to Joan, Auggie and Jai. The body was found in pieces by local police.
An emergency meeting is held to see what's going to happen to Annie and whether she's compromised with this or not. Joan is certain she's not because there's a lot of people around her, so they can't make a call just yet. Back at the club, the operatives keep on watching their conversation (and Annie seems to be an expert). As the girls to to the bathroom, Annie confronts her about the medal, and that it's most likely that Victor killed Lopez as the boys are outside talking. Annie tells Julia that it's best that she and Diego wait at the bank for her.
A red ferrari pulls up as Victor kisses Julia. Both him and Annie get in the car and leave. That's some REALLY fast shit, if you ask me. But she finds what she's looking for, in the keychain. The car pulls up in a bridge and they switch places. He really IS trying to make a move on her, and at last she manages to get it in motion. Or at least he's two seconds away from blowing her cover, judging by the gun he aimed at her and the call she just made. But she uses her driving skills to her favor to get him without a gun and out of the car long enough for her to drive off.
She comes back to town and is talking to Auggie about what happened, and that there's one of their own outside the bank. Julia asks what happened to Victor as they have no time to waste, and that they get their things because they're not coming back. She is warned that he is inside the bank, and Diego is frightened as he sees Victor being led to the back by the manager. Joan & Co. have managed to get access to the account just in time, and as Annie is telling her to go, Julia seems reluctant, but Annie says Victor shot her. Annie pushes that they have to go early, and this triggers the alarm. They get a cab, but Diego is still inside. She has no choice but to get in, and it speeds off.
Auggie tells her that Diego will be escorted by the guy that was outside as Julia seems really sad, and, at Langley, Joan says that no one is going home that night because they need to check the transactions before they are shut down.
At DC, Annie and Diego are talking about that Julia is not taking it to well, and he is questioning whether he did the right thing. They'll have to start a new life tomorrow, and Auggie can sense that she feels bad (losing her luggage, having Diego bragging that he spent the night with her and getting shot), even though he shouldn't be there if he doesn't want to face Joan's wrath. It is then when Auggie says that Joan has envy of her because she used to be one of the best. She sees Julia and Diego leave.
Next, Auggie and Annie are investigating the account as Julia and Diego are taken to a safehouse. At the first chance she gets, she gets her hands on a phone. But all this gets to the DPD, so Annie explains that part of the reason why Julia didn't want to leave Venezuela was because part of those funds were used to improve the favela children's life quality, hence her nickname.
Annie gets to the safehouse just as Victor has entered the US, and Julia has given back the phone. Diego has to stay, but they think it'll be wiser for him to come because they might need him to reason with her. They are all in her car as Auggie is keeping tabs as well, the rest of the team watching. Joan says Annie should step down, but she has a much better idea.
Julia meets with her lover, and they are about to head back together as the guy that was in the safehouse gets out of the car. Annie says that all they have to do is wait, but Diego can't handle the guilt and gets out, so Annie has to go running after him. As Victor and Julia are at the car, she hears his brother's voice, and all of a sudden, she's attacked the same way Lopez was, in hopes to strangle her for betraying him. The safehouse guy shoots and kills off Victor. Annie grabs the medal as Julia hugs her brother, who tried to get in the car's way, but Walker had to push him aside to save his life.
And Annie still can't seem to let go of her memories towards Ben because, that night, she takes out the bracelet she had on a box and returns it to where it belonged.
Wow, this episode had a lot of action and showed Annie's skills in practice, and how far she'll go to protect those she cares for (although she's still clueless on why she's still there). Ben's memory doesn't seem to be buried in a shoebox, and Auggie is ALWAYS the one who's there by her...Bring in the next!
