Covert Affairs 2x07: Half a World Away
This year's Auggie-centric episode. It starts off with Annie talking to Auggie, who is aboard a plane, trying to find his seat. She’s calling for something important during his vacation. He’s headed for Istanbul. A flight attendant comes to help him with his luggage, since he’s blind. He helps Annie through the phone with her ‘important business’ (a salad, lol) before he hangs up and the plane takes off.
Next thing we know is Turkey, and Auggie going over the city with jazz music in the background. The city’s full of colors and life, and he finds one of his friends that’s part of this festival he went to. In his hotel, he’s checking the audio recording of the concert and enjoying some…intimate time with the flight attendant from earlier on. His cover is that he’s a music journalist/sound engineer. But in the middle of the recording he hears a voice that he recognizes as the man who blinded Auggie. Credit sequence.
In Istanbul, Auggie still can’t believe the shock and this takes us to Iraq, a few years prior when he was there. Him and his troop were playing football, and all of them take a picture. Then he’s called in by a general. He’s been assigned a mission with his men to take down an Iraqi mastermind. It must be hard for him to remember all that, but he knows he’s got someone to have his back: Annie. And he needs a favor: For her to look the name of an Iraqi terrorist to see if he’s really deceased, and that it should stay between them.
Back to the jazz fest in Turkey, Auggie meets up with his friend and says his recording didn’t came up so well. At Langley, Annie can’t find the file as Joan pays a brief visit. She tells him that it has been removed from the database, but she found a clue that’ll take her to Baltimore, and promises to tell her everything when he’s back, and Auggie seems way too worried. By the way, he’s still with the flight attendant.
So she’s going to have to be his eyes around the city. They’re in a market, and we’re onto another memory. Auggie and his crew are en route to his mission, listening to jazz. They’re stopped by a man with goats and they see something odd ahead the road and they decide to shoot. It was an explosive charge, so for their safety they change roads. Back to the present, the flight attendant is doing everything Auggie asked her to do while following this guy.
In Maryland, Annie has arrived to a manicure place looking for the sister of this terrorist. So she gets her nails done and starts talking to her. She says her brother is dead, so with this information she calls Auggie before getting in a van that drives her away. This guy seems to be FBI, so she better be careful. He says she got in the middle of his investigation because she’s been giving them information about her brother, who’s still alive and managing terrorist cells. Suddenly, all of this makes some sense for Annie.
The flight attendant continues the tailing job, where he gives her a bug and instructions to head into a restaurant and to scan the place and the guy. She sits a couple of tables away from this guy, who has met with another person. The sound of a glass breaking triggers another memory for Auggie about his days in Iraq and that mission in particular. They have reached their destination when shots are fired and one of the soldiers is killed. Another soldier is shot as Auggie seems to be the last man standing. He is the one that enters the safehouse, where he kills the man they are looking for. Back to present, he continues to hear the whole conversation between these two men about some cargo and travelling, which seems to pain him deeply. Then he calls Annie, who shares with him how her visit went, and that if he knew that the sister was being investigated by the FBI. She insists that he tells her, but instead he simply thanks her for everything she’s done.
Annie’s suspicions take her to Joan’s office to ask for help about Auggie’s issue. She thinks his plan is to track him down and kill him at a small airport nearby that only has a cargo flight to Lima. Another flashback shows that Auggie gets off the safehouse and tries to protect his crew when a bomb goes off. That must’ve been why he was blinded.
So he prepares his equipment and heads there with the flight attendant. Meanwhile, Annie meets up in a park with the FBI agent to give him a little indication on what’s going to happen soon. Back to that small airport, Auggie tells her to pick one place and that they’ll meet there in a month: She chooses Barbados. She gets a call from a blocked phone. It’s Annie demanding to talk to Auggie, and wants to stop him from doing what he wants to do. He says it’s complicated, and that it’s too late. His intuition made him trust the flight attendant, who wishes him good luck since Auggie is now aboard the plane and on his own.
He’s checking the cargo through sound, and its passengers as well. He already knows where his target is at, and is in for the kill. The terrorist is startled by the sound and runs to the back, where Auggie fights him off. He seems to recognize Anderson. The fight is intense, but we know Auggie is taking out all his rage and frustration for being blind. I really thought Auggie was going to kill him, but he didn’t.
The plane gets to Dulles airport and the guy is immediately arrested by the FBI as Joan and Annie watch from a screen. They also watch Auggie get down the plane. He remembers when he got the purple heart medal and tells Annie the story of why he ended up blind. Over beers, she says he did the right thing as Auggie says that when you’re blind you forget some things but that he still remembers that photo they took at Iraq with his unit, that he still holds. Both thank each other and ask for more beers.
