Covert Affairs 2x04: All the Right Friends
The first thing we see is Annie (through Auggie’s voice) and what is about to happen: A spy exchange in Argentina. In her custody there’s an Italian spy that, suddenly, looks more interested in Walker’s look. But keeping her cool, she reads him out (he says it’s a journalist exposing injustices) just as, we were told earlier, the plane lands in Entre Rios (a province in Argentina) to make the exchange.
Annie sees she has no phone service as well. She gets off the plane in hopes of reception, and once she does, she calls Auggie to ask where her contact is at. There’s been weather problems, so they’ll have no choice but to wait. Her conversation allows this Italian guy to run, but Annie catches up to him quickly, cuffing herself to him as a measure to keep him on a tight leash. He says he isn’t going back to Italy because people want to silence him. Suddenly, they see a car parked by the jet and the pilot being shot at. So what do they do? Run. The guy starts shooting at the field as well. Credit sequence.
So Annie and Carlo (the Italian) still run, as, in Langley, Joan has to deal with the Italians and the people of Argentina. The guy in Buenos Aires says that if he catches either one of them, they’ll be arrested as foreign spies because he wants to keep his job, and the conversation is cut off. Auggie and Jai were there as well, and Joan sends them to talk to Arthur.
Back to Argentina, they continue to run while they have sunlight, but he says he has people that can help them. They argue, but since Annie says they have to get to Buenos Aires and a safe location. In Langley, Arthur has a job offer for Auggie: the Office of Congressional Affairs (OCA). He isn’t sure to accept because he could no longer go to the field because of the public exposure. Campbell, of course, is trying to convince him that he’s the ideal candidate but has to think it through quite well. Just by looking at Auggie, he isn’t happy with this. In another part, Jai is informing Jai about Carlo and where he has been lately to later goes to Auggie to ask about the meeting. The last thing Joan does is hand out some instructions.
In Argentina, Annie manages to get her hands in a car and starts the long way to the capital (off-topic: The representation of Argentina is way too bad). Joan is informed that the plane in the Falklands is being held at Customs as Jai sets up a face to face chat with the ambassador. And that the shooter Annie and Carlo saw earlier was a separatist from Chechenia.
Looks to me that Annie & Co. just had a problem with gas and their car just died. She is trying to fix it while asking who would want Carlo dead. Annie fixed it as they go on (blackmail for a macchiato included), stopping at a place to repair the car as Carlo notices there’s internet connection and that he’s not scared of jail.
They go inside the place to eat something (a milanesa, macchiato and a parrillada. All of a sudden I’m hungry too). Carlo is sure Annie likes him, and that there is something called sympathy between them. At a moment, he says he needs to use the toilet, but I have a bad feeling about this. But then again, Annie is way too smart and will catch him once again. See? Told you so. It’s time to continue the journey. But the shooter, and a roadblock have them cornered. While they are being shot, Annie has to find a way to get away from both.
Looks to me that they got away from the two threats, just as, in DC, Joan goes to a meeting with the ambassador. She says she’s worried and confused about all this mess. He says he’s got her back and asks for a few hours to see what he can do. Joan drives back, as Jai informs her about the search they have on Annie so they’ll have to work on an extraction protocol.
Annie finds a device hidden on Carlo’s belt, which may be why the hitter found them.
So from now on, they’ll have to continue by foot and she demands to know who wants him dead. As they are close to Buenos Aires, he says it may have to do with a story he’s been working on about oil rigs. And they get to the beautiful capital of Argentina, in the middle of a celebration (soccer-related), when Annie gets a call from Joan, who tells her not to go to the Italian embassy and Auggie is the one who working on the extraction. To top things off, two of Carlo’s sources are dead. He seems shocked with this, and feels guilty. They bump into a police officer and Carlo got lost in the crowd.
He headed to a newspaper, and Annie finds him. He wants to get his story out in the case he’s killed. She finally gets some pity out of him and lets him go to the editor’s office. At Langley, Auggie and Arthur talk again about the work offer he made earlier on. Campbell wants an answer, just as Anderson wants some terms of his own. Carlo tells Annie that this paper is working on this as well, and that the person that visited him when in custody was Ambassador Romano.
Joan tells the same to the guy in Buenos Aires that the ambassador is the man, but he’s bringing her in anyways because of what happened with police earlier. Carlo and Annie get to a wharf, and she sees the shooter there, so the intuition is that someone might’ve tipped him off. As she was about to uncuff him, a shot is heard and they lose the key.
Carlo and Annie come face to face with the shooter and fight him off as a team. The shooter is unconscious as a helicopter comes to rescue them. But also police come to arrest them. This is about to get intense. Everyone is armed, and the ambassador just killed the shooter instead of Annie. They get in the helicopter and leave Argentina.
Back at Langley, Joan watches as Annie conducts a debriefing as Jai figures out Auggie got the job and wishes him good luck, even though he’s a bit jealous. At an air base in the Falklands, she and Carlo part ways, not before thanking her for everything. And once she’s back home, she finds his article printed and a voice message from Auggie. Not only he welcomes her back, but says he needs to tell her something important and that they need to talk.
