Covert Affairs 2x02: Good Advices
This episode starts at the Agency. Annie has brought coffee for everyone and finds that nobody is at the office, except Jai, who tells her the rest is at a meeting, but it’s actually a little surprise to celebrate her birthday…that is next week, but since she thinks it’s bad luck, someone else blows out the candle for her and they are about to eat the cake when Joan comes in and tells Annie to head to her office, which is usually something bad that Auggie already had let it slip because he said something about her not being there to celebrate in six days.
Joan tells Annie that she’s being sent to Paris to cultivate an asset, and not for what Joan thinks judging by her look. Walker knows a lot about Salma Devrient (the asset) and why she may be vulnerable now. I love how Joan has second and third thoughts about giving her this mission, but she did, because Annie is in Paris, making surveillance and wearing a pretty coat as she follows Salma on the street. Better said, she’s spent the last 3 days following her and getting to know her routine. This takes her to a museum to keep an eye on her, as she has told Auggie. Credit sequence.
At Langley, Auggie and Joan talk about the trial she’s about to face as juror, so she’ll leave Auggie in charge for now and enjoys to ask how Annie is doing in Paris. Regarding that, Annie’s really lucky to travel that much, and her following took her to a clothing store where Selma’s card has been declined to buy shoes. During that, Annie switches identical bags and Selma leaves. A while later, she calls Auggie and finds a number in her planner that he’ll run out: 43-59-14-17. It’ll only be a matter of time until she makes contact with Annie for the bag. As they are talking, Joan comes in and nobody told Walker she was there. Joan says she should stop shopping and focusing on finding a known terrorist as Jai asks why Auggie’s in charge. Her other line starts ringing, and as we figured out, it’s Salma, and they have met in a café. They change their bags once again, and Annie uses a bottle of wine as an excuse to halt her and have a little something called female conversation about this fiancé. Annie asks her if she wants to join her for a black-tie event that night, and Salma accepts, not before saying she’s met a man named George not so long ago.
In that black-tie event, Annie has to turn down a guy in French like a lady, when she bumps into Eyal Lavin, an old acquaintance with whom she’s ran into trouble more than once (Season 1), and who also turns out to be George, Salma’s new love interest. It’s kind of an awkward situation for Walker, because she has to maintain her Smithsonian cover and all. He and Salma go to dance and Annie calls Auggie to let him know the Mossad is on the hunt too. He, in turn, calls Joan, who happens to be in jury duty in that moment and gets scolded by the judge. Owch! Salma and ‘George’ go dancing, so, to keep tabs on them, Annie dances with the guy that earlier she turned down to then dance (talk, better said) with Eval. Salma comes back quite worried, because she bumped into a weird-looking guy from her work, so they decide it’s better that all three leave.
Salma isn’t stupid and figures out who these people really are and that they want access to the Embassy, and wants to sell her data to the highest bidder before leaving. Eval and Annie are left without words. But Annie decides to go ahead and bid that for $50.000 euros, approved by Joan and supervised by Auggie. So the next day she and Salma would go ahead with the deal at the same café where they traded bags, but she never showed up. So Annie heads to her apartment and finds Eval. Salma’s apartment is a mess and she’s been killed, and, go figure, something stolen from her. A guy comes out shooting behind Eval and a struggle starts to chase this guy through the roof as Annie does the same in the street (pretty intense, if you ask me). But he takes the easy way out by letting himself fall instead of telling them who sent the guy.
In the streets of Paris, he decides that it’s best that they split because he works by himself and Annie is anything but trouble, but she has the intuition that it has something to do with the post-it note with those numbers. With all this, she even forgot about the birthday because Danielle, alongside her daughters, send her a birthday video message. But the post-it triggered something on her, and she asks Auggie if there’s a train leaving at 2:17. Indeed, there is, but since her return flight is already booked for 4, this is a matter of time.
Back at the trial where Joan is juror, she’s been sent a message from Auggie (an S.O.S) in the middle of the interrogation, but the judge is a bitch and takes away the phone. So Auggie and Jai have to take the call of delaying Annie’s flight, in hopes her hunch turns out correct. And it did; in the train station she notices the guy that was in the embassy eyeing Salma, and even Eval is there, creating a distraction long enough for Annie to snap a photo, and next thing we know they are in a bar, drinking martinis and discussing about life and their covers. Is it just me or is he trying to hit on her? Either that or he has a plan up his sleeve. Oh, Annie. You fell for it!
He took something off her phone and next thing we know he’s being put inside a van. Annie hails a taxi and follows to a house outside the city. She sees men moving him, so she calls Auggie while seeing these men carry a video camera. Maybe she feels guilty and wants to do something, so nothing better than a friend to guide you every step of the way (including how to set up an explosion). As she’s trying to save our Mossad friend, Walker shows some more of her skills and they make a run out of that estate. Of course, they’re being chased and shot at, but is in these kind of situations where you have to let your creativity fly, and in the face of adversity it’s always good to have your back covered…especially when you’re about to be shot.
At the train station, she confronts him about the memory card theft and about a receipt for the world’s most expensive taxi ride. But that was no receipt, it was a happy birthday message before they part ways and he vanishes. Joan managed to excuse herself from jury duty and bribe someone for a phone too after pissing off the judge.
Later we see her talk to Auggie about how difficult it is to make decisions that can affect your friends’ safety, and that it’ll only get harder as Annie is storing in her safe things from the trip. Danielle brings her sister a cupcake for her birthday as Walker says she was in Paris, and even got to spoil herself with that red bag. The last thing we see is Annie blowing out the candle that fades the scene to black.
