3x04: The Dentist of Detroit
The episode starts with June looking for some weird objects in the company of Neal and Mozzie. Better said, Moz is selling all of his 'treasures' in behalf of a Mr. Jeffrey, his headmaster back at Detroit.
Next, we see Peter and his team at the FBI handing out assignments. A guy from the Detroit mafia might be in town, strange things are happening and they have to keep an eye for financial movements. Something didn't click at all for Neal, so he asks for permission to leave to go talk to Moz (who tried to refuse selling a bear) when the son of this DeLuca guy enters the sales room loooking for someone known as 'the dentist of detroit', nickname that makes them all laugh. Looks like this guy is a myth and leaves something for him requesting an appointment before leaving. When looking at the photo DeLuca left, Moz admits he is the dentist of Detroit. Credit sequence.
At the Bureau, they are all investigating DeLuca without knowing what Neal knows. But Peter has an idea that they may be able to track this guy through Moz, who is trying to find one of his devices that could be useful when he goes to meet with DeLuca. Neal thinks he's crazy and Moz thinks they found him because of the donation he made for this Mr. Jeffrey. Peter (aka 'The Suit') comes to pay them both a visit to ask things about DeLuca. There is nothing they can do to change his mind...except consider him a protected witness, ocassion Neal enjoys to tell Peter that he's the dentist of Detroit, much to Moz' dismay. With this information, Peter calls Diana to have her collect everything there is about their new case.
Later, both Caffrey and Burke watch Moz, who is in some sort of cell. Neal says he only knows part of the story before they enter to ask Moz questions. Looks like he was big as 'the dentist' back at the Motor City. Neal tries to convince him into telling his story to them.
The story has a starting point in 1969. This Jeffreys person found a baby Moz abandoned in the front door of a church and took him in. There was a teddy bear named Mozart next to him (the same on Moz had refused to sell earlier). As the years went by, he was still orphan and bullied. The bear is all Moz has from his real parents and Mr. Jeffreys taught him the gift of reading and knowledge, leading to what Moz is today. But he has no idea where he's at...until Peter tells him they searched the house and Moz finds a clue in a bear. Neal has an idea: He'll go as the dentist's assistant to keep Moz said.
Under heavy surveillance from the FBI, Neal goes to the meeting with DeLuca. Since DeLuca won't talk to anyone but the dentist, Neal has a plan to lure DeLuca into Peter's car, but he's not going anywhere without proof that is given by Moz through a simple question such as what's his favorite ice cream. When DeLuca has what he wants, he hands Neal a paper and starts talking about a con that the dentist pulled on his father and that he's in New York for payback. After that, both part ways. Later, he informs Peter about what DeLuca said: He wants to go ahead with that con, and that could play to their advantage.
Moz demands immunity before talking because he was 12 when he stole that money from the mob, which takes us once more back to Mozzie's story. He ran away after that because he was being blamed for a theft and that's how his life on the streets started (and how he was introduced to the con business). For a child, Moz was awesome and that popularity brought DeLuca into the scene. What he did to DeLuca Sr. was simply payback that led him to NYC. Jones comes in with what Moz figures out is another clue, but he doesn't want to understand that he's in danger. It is hilarious when Jones says they're taking him to the safehouse and Moz starts making demands.
At the safehouse, Neal brings Moz everything he's asked for and Jones shows him the photos of Jeffreys at the toll. Judging by the book and CD seen on the dashboard, Moz figures they'll meet at the Statue of Liberty. With this hunch, they decide to go ahead with the con all the way to catch two wanted criminals. Diana is on the field as it all takes place. Neal meets up with a guy named O'Leary offering a business, but he doesn't trust until Caffrey offers him something tempting that has to do with betting.
Next, we see Peter in a tux and Elizabeth making muffins for Moz. I insist they make a lovely couple. Neal comes by to pay him a visit (in a tux too) and Elizabeth can't resist taking a picture of them before they leave.
Thet get to the party, blending in with the people as DeLuca's guy comes by and starts talking to Neal. Meanwhile, Elizabeth goes to keep Moz company, playing cards and eating muffins. We find out she has done some bad things in her younger years and he admits to her that he's never had the courage to face them before. Back to the party, they meet with this O'Leary guy (and his money briefcase) and Neal explains what the 'business' is about, involving horse races. Looks like this guy has fallen into the trap, but slighty (based on the amount of money he bet)
I feel Diana is super fed up with Moz and his requests (the latest of them a melon). Feels like Moz will do something as soon as the feds leave...and he does! His intelligence never ceased to amaze me, and he went to meet with June, who handed him something for him to return just in time to avoid suspicions.
Back at the party, O'Leary is still making small bets and there's one race left. Peter has an idea for the plan and looks like he's enjoying it (looks real), and in
consists on 'firing' Neal. Seems to work, since O'Leary make a super big bet on the race. By the way, if I said Moz had returned, I was wrong. He ran away and left a note behind, so Diana warns Neal.
Things start looking complicated when O'Leary starts blaming Peter for a set-up that made him lose a lot of money. Burke makes it all seem like it's not his fault and offers that he takes his money, meaning he bit the bait. Neither of them know what Moz has done: Going to a bridge to meet with DeLuca, admitting that he's the man that he's looking for. DeLuca demands that he's handed the money, but Moz is using his intelligence to tell him he's being set-up by the feds. He leaves DeLuca witn a choice, making him look like a fool just like his father. He's about to shoot Moz when the FBI bursts into the scene and arrests DeLuca.
After that, he even thanks Peter for what he's done and Moz is back in Neal's apartment. Peter is also there, reencountering Moz with Mr. Jeffreys after years. We see a happy Moz as Jeffreys grabs the bear and Peter and Neal decide to leave them alone. Looks like this episode had quite a happy ending.
