Covert Affairs 2x08: Welcome to the Occupation
It starts off with Annie practicing rock climbing in West Virginia, accompanied by a guy. At the same time, a man enters a building carrying a briefcase in Mexico City. He manages to overpass all the security measures and makes his way to where a big company meeting is taking place. What we weren’t counting on is that he had help on the inside to hide weapons for a hostage situation. This guy had everything researched from a start, because he knows details about each and every one of them and the building’s security, and they all freak out when they thing he’s going to pull out a gun, but he took out his phone to film a short video that will serve as proof of life for his demands.
Back to Walker in her date, she was about to have a tender moment when Auggie calls and says her presence is requested immediately. So she has to take a raincheck and come off. Credit sequence.
At the CIA, Annie isn’t happy that she has to work on a Saturday, but Auggie says they have a hostage situation in Mexico City held by an eco terrorist group no one has heard of before. What happens is that the woman, Megan, is a CIA operative. And she managed to send an emergency message before they broke in. Joan has specifically requested that Annie be the one to handle this, but Walker knows she has never faced this scenario. Auggie fills her in on details about the group leader, Delgado, and his demands: $83.5 million transferred to his account so he can release the hostages. All in all he takes her to a room that looks made for a screen test.
Joan and Arthur have a discussion at home about work. He’s her boss, but she executes those operations. After she leaves, he calls someone and says this person should pack their bags. In another part, Jai goes to visit his father, Henry Wilcox, to request his help with this hostage crisis, because he’s in the board and can help getting a CIA operative inside. As they are talking, Jai is the witness of a bad realization: Through the security system, he sees Liza Hearn, the reporter, come in.
At the airfield, Joan meets up with Annie, asking if she has been briefed already. They will pose as a television crew related to this group’s cause to get in. Annie will be the host, Joan the producer, and their cameraman is waiting aboard the plane: Both are surprised (for different reasons) to see Ben Mercer.
For Annie is especially awkward, but during the flight she keeps her professional cool as Ben tries to explain why he left without saying goodbye. Joan is watching it all from a distance and Annie is trying to learn her cover. But Joan decides to come in and establish rules: She’s in command, that this is only a recon mission and no bullets will be fired.
Back in DC, the doctor Annie met a couple episodes ago (and with who she was climbing) takes her gear to her house, and explains to Danielle that her sister had a work emergency. The girls are happy to see their doctor as well, and they invite him in. Joan, Annie and Ben arrive to Mexico City, and Joan says they have two hours to get in and out, and after going all through the procedures, they meet up with Delgado. Joan says that, until she sees the hostages, there will be no interview. But he says that will happen only after the interview is recorded. Everything is set up, and this video and audio feed is getting through to Auggie and Arthur, who isn’t happy to see his wife there. They record the hostages and ask if they are OK.
When they get to Megan, she says she’s unharmed, treated well, and that they’ve given them food and water. Auggie plays that again and realizes it’s a coded message: 7 hostages, 5 terrorists, armed and dangerous. As Annie is recording, Delgado is quite suspicious of her and ends up pointing a gun at her. Ben wants to do something about it, but Joan stops him.
The problem is that he doesn’t believe her, but the CIA has it all prepared, which saves her from getting shot. In DC, Danielle and the girls ask the doctor if him and Annie are getting married as they get a radio message that the police is outside, asking for a car. He headed there by the executive’s wife, and the guy makes up a story to whisk him away.
Upstairs, Delgado asks Annie if there’s anything he can do before the interview. She asks that Megan can use the bathroom, and is there where she meets with her friend Joan, and gives them some details about the terrorists. Meanwhile, Jai goes to confront Liza about her visit to his father’s house. She writes something in a napkin and leaves.
Arthur gets a visit from Henry Wilcox, who lets him know he’s doing what he can to expedite the transfer, and is surprised when Campbell says that Joan is in place. Arthur wants to speak to her, but Auggie says that isn’t possible. Back at Mexico City, it’s a matter of time before their cover is open. Ben asks Annie if she’s okay, and it looks like he’s trying to calm her as Delgado hands her a page with questions she’ll have to ask in the interview. As this happens, he gets a message saying the wire transfer is complete and the focus of the conversation changes drastically. Annie immediately confronts Delgado with questions, and Auggie (who’s watching alongside Arthur) is certain she’s doing that because she has a plan. Indeed, she did it to get closer to the hostages because Delgado (who broke the camera, and cut the feed) isn’t letting them out alive.
The three of them are put in the room, and Delgado gives the order to kill them all when he’s aboard his jet. He wants to take Megan, but the company’s president takes her place instead and is taken at gunpoint by Delgado. Joan says Annie was right about Delgado’s supposition and now it’s Ben’s turn to get them all out of here.
In DC, Arthur is going to lose his mind, but Auggie says there is nothing more he can do than to wait and trust in Joan. Ben has a little device that will help all the hostages go to the roof. Joan and Megan get them out of the way by kicking ass as Ben and Annie climb to the roof. They find one of those things used to clean windows, and Mercer cuts the power supply of Delgado’s elevator. Joan and Megan will take the hostages as Ben took out the last one out of play with a fire extinguisher and, with Annie’s help, will go after Delgado.
We both know they work great as a team and they go down the building just in time to find Delgado, He fires a shot, but Ben stops him. It is when the company’s president takes the gun that we find out he was the one who was pulling the strings. As Ben said, Joan will be proud that not a single bullet was fired. In the airfield, Joan and Megan get together again before Joan has to leave. Ben is trying to convince Annie to go to Belize with him, but she passes the offer. She gives him a kiss on the cheek, and he says there’s something different about her as he sees her aboard the plane.
On board, Joan is drinking wine and has her hand resting on ice when Annie comes in, saying she just spoke to Auggie. The company president confessed everything, and Megan is on her next mission. Not to mention Joan offered her white wine as well. In the night of DC, Jai gets in the back of the limo his father is at. Henry Wilcox was the one that leaked information to Liza Hearn, and says that if he goes down, his son will suffer the same fate.
Joan’s gas lasted until she got in the door. As soon as she set foot there, Arthur has some cute words written for his wife (she knew as soon as she saw Ben that Arthur had something to do), and has prepared dinner for both. As for Annie, she retakes her date with the doctor with a picnic in the rocks.
