[Recaps] Covert Affairs Season 1 / Episode 8 - What is and What Should Never Be

Covert Affairs
1x08 - What is and What Should Never Be

We start with something new: A previously that summarizes everything that has happened so far...Well, after this we see a corpse, lots of rain and Annie being arrested. Arthur and Joan are talking about that, and she says she'll try get Annie out, who is at an interrogation room, about to be questioned by the guy that confused her for a call girl in the pilot episode. He has to step out a moment, and looks to me Annie's in shock. Credit sequence.

Joan arrives to the FBI, claiming she's Annie's lawyer. They don't buy it, but anyways she sits down next to Walker and asks her to take a breath and start remembering everything that happened. It all started two days ago, when she attended an auction as part of her Smithsonian cover. As soon as she sets foot, she starts talking to a guy about a painting they are both after. Wow, that's really high. $10 million for that!

Back at Langley, Annie asks her blind companion whether they should report something, no matter how stupid it is. Someone marked her program to keep an eye on that particular painting. Then she bumps into Jai, who she invited to a family BBQ. Jai is posing as a friend of hers, and sister seems to like him. Apparently, he had fun as well and escorted her to her house...where she receives a visit from none other than Ben Mercer. OMG!

He says he's sorry for leaving her and breaking her heart, and I don't buy any of that crappy speech. Neither does she, since he was with the Agency. And he saved her on the first episode, and now he's on his own. She wants him to talk, since he was the one who marked the program. I can see why she's upset and not trusting the guy. An arms dealer moves his money in different ways, and the auction was just one. He needs her help, and says the CIA is using her to get to him, therefore she shouldn't trust Joan or Arthur. At work, Annie tries to get information on Ben and a woman named Sophie Jacklin, but doesn't have enough cleareance, according to Auggie.

Then it's back to present time where Annie tells Joan that Sophie dragged her into the auction, and asks her exactly what Ben told her. What does the bitch do? Points Annie with a gun, since Jacklin didn't buy the cover. Annie tries to get her to put the gun down when she says Ben sent her. They met at Italy and (apparently) had something. The wisest thing to do is to run before his men come to pick the painting. Two men catch up with them and a confrontation arises. Annie and Sophie hide at a deposit. Jacklin decides to move with the gun as Annie has another idea. She started a fire and Sophie killed a guy, just as the other attacked Walker. Sophie's dead and the water wasn't rain, but the fire extinguisher.

That takes us to the begining of the episode. Annie tells Joan that Sophie had called her and all we know so far, plus a minor interruption from a federal agent, and the reason why she's in their custody. They were after a missile plan. She was an asset.

Jai is watching Annie's sister, and breaks into the house with the help of Auggie. Jai has the bad luck of finding a photo of Ben and Annie, and then calls Joan, who asks Annie what she was looking for at the database, because she's in a VERY deep issue here. Joan just tells her to speak about Ben. Annie is confused as to why the interest, just as she confesses she has seen him.

In the meantime, Jai checks the tapes with the security guard, and takes it to Joan, who keeps pressuring Annie to tell everything she knows, even forcing her to make a choice. Apparently, she spoke because she's with Joan at her office. She tells her who Ben was, and that he went rogue. But no one seems to answer Walker what's the reason she was recruited for.

Aftet that harsh moment, she goes to Auggie. It's obvious he would do anything for her. She has to report to FBI and help them out as condition for her release. Later on, she and the FBI agent arrive to the auction house to help out with the crime scene and reconstruct what happened there. They find a box, someone took the painting and the guard is dead. Awesome!

At Langley. Annie asks Joan what she can do. But she's sent home instead. Ben left her that matchbox with a meeting place: The port, and a huge boat. But it's not Ben, but the dude at the auction. Does that mean Ben just put her in a trap? As usual, Annie gives the good fight to not get killed, a good chase included. But Jai Wilcox comes to her rescue right on time. Do I smell love in the air?

Arthur and Joan talk about Ben Mercer and the leads he left Annie. That all in all he did the right thing. And, as Arthur said, she's in this whether she likes it or not, as Annie wraps the day, sitting outside by herself.

Wow...this episode showed the comeback of Ben in Annie's life, and it looks like they'll have to work together more in the future. But I'm with Arthur here. She's ALWAYS in harm's way. Oh, well...Bring in the next!
